Gordon Brown seems to be going to some lengths to avoid inviting the Dalai Lama to Downing Street while he's in the UK. His Holiness will address both houses of parliament, and can meet the Prime Minister at the more 'spiritual' venue of Lambeth Palace (residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury), but can't come to Number 10. Strange, when you remember how eager Mr Brown was to appear in front of Number 10 with that other contentious icon, the Olympic torch.

I dont think the Dalai Lama is that fussed. And why should he be? He's not a national leader of an independent, but a spiritual one of a country that wishes to be an autonomous zone. I wonder how much effect on miseriguts His Holiness (with his abundantly evident sense of humour) can have...

True enough... I expect His Holiness is supremely indifferent; but it does send questionable messages to those who have not cultivated quite the same level of non-attachment.
