Something New for the New Year

I've blogged a couple of times about the furore caused by the publication of some memoirs by Sir Christopher Meyer, former British ambassador to the US. It may have seemed a bit off-topic, even for this rather wayward blog, so it's time for me to come clean. I am, as one US immigration officer once put it when I applied for a visa, "a diplomatic brat". I was born in the Middle East and spent much of my childhood in various parts of it as my father was posted from one country to another. So when, a few weeks ago, my father gave me a copy of some brief reminiscences he had been persuaded to write concerning his early experiences in the Diplomatic Service, it presented interesting parallels with the Meyer story. As I mentioned, Meyer's career ended with the plum post --- Washington --- and political access at the highest levels. Over fifty years earlier, my father's career, too, started with immediate access to the heads of several states, and wide-ranging responsibilities both political and domestic. But that's about where the similarities end... So over the next few weeks I'll 'serialise' those reminiscences here. Unfortunately for my father, I won't be paying the kind of serialisation fees Meyer got from the newspapers, but I hope you enjoy his story nonetheless.
