Hrm. I enjoyed the movie, as is, and was not impressed by the alternate ending. I've not read the book, so when watching the alternate ending it was not clear to me what they were trying to say with it, other than the dark seekers do retain some form of social structure. The hints at the wall of "subjects'" pictures was too subtle for me to get the idea behind the "I am legend" concept (apparently) presented in the book (I'm trying to avoid spoilers here).
To put it a different way, I think the alternate ending was poorly executed if they were trying to convey the concepts of the original story. Executed differently I think it could have been better than the theatrical version. Regardless, the alternate ending did feel a bit cheesy to me, compared.
Have you (dear readers, or Rama) seen Omega Man? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067525/ It's dated, but the rendition of the story is pretty good.

I just watched I Am Legend and I Am Disappointed. I watched the alternate ending and it is better. I could see the setup of the zombie trying to get to his mate and the alternate ending ties up this loose end. It also reinforces the idea that humanity is not lost, even within the zombie population.

The alternate ending is *so* much better. I'm sure it's more than challenging to decide which ending is less predictable & more emotionally satisfying and balance that with the polarity of which ending will be more favorable to the bottom line. In either case, I'm glad it's now common practice to offer both.
Thanks for the alternate ending pointer -- we watched in on PPV & may not have given it enough time so we missed it.
