I mentioned in passing to Jed and Igor yesterday that I unsuccessfully researched whether it was legal to raise chickens and/or have bee hives in my city. This morning, Igor shares this article: Man's new best friend lays eggs. Ha! I had no idea I was not alone in this thinking. Or that there were such funky chicken breeds out there, such as the Silkie Bantam.

Anyone raise chickens (or bees) within city limits? I'm talking small backyards, you guys in Colorado don't count. :) I'd prefer not to have a hideous coop, but my neighborhood (like the rest of the bay area) has raccoon problems.

Comments:

My brother in Portland, OR has chickens. It is getting more and more common these days.

Next year I'm going to order my first chickens from this place.

Who wants a boring white chicken after you've seen these rare breeds? :)

While searching for something else, I stumbled upon this:

Bees need a permit:

But, since you have close neighbors, they would probably be considered a nuisance.

8.28.030 NUISANCE WHEN. No person shall keep bees in any place in such quantities as to create a source of constant annoyance or discomfort to any person...

Fowl also need a permit , but that permit seems more feasible assuming you can corral them:

Rama, may I ask why you're researching this topic?

No particular reason- its just part of my "its better if I make it myself" kick and the fact that I'd rather be living on a farm.

John posted a link to my blog above (http://myurbanchickens.blogspot.com) and I'm on the Peninsula in Redwood City. Faced with the same "do I want an ugly wood coop in my yard?" question, I went out and got an Eglu (see pix on my blog or http://www.omlet.us for details) for our two backyard hens. Has been a great experience so far raising the chickens from their week-old selves, and we're within a month of our first eggs. Happy to answer any questions you have if you want to keep digging on this subject. I'm four months into it and still pleased with the decision to raise chickens in the (Redwood) city.

Hey, raising a chicken is good. Aside from getting good meat, you can also have fertilizer and fresh eggs. I even have chicken backyard in my home.

There are lot of way if you want to raise a chicken within the city and just make it sure you are a responsible person because chicken needs love and care aside from the feeds they ate. Make it sure also you have a proper area and a nice chicken cage.
