• Not so fast
Well, using Gimp as a replacement for Photoshop is not as easy as it would seem. And, I'm growing increasingly more frustrated. It doesn't seem to do as nice a job as similar operations in Photoshop, and it's a real pain to use. It might be lack of familiarity on my part, but I think I'm going to have to give up on the plan and go back to Photoshop. Gimp is proving to be too aggrevating.
Also, the version of Gimp on the OpenSolaris repository is a few versions behind. The version for MacOSX 10.4+ is up to date. That's annoying, but I'm not willing to waste time compiling the thing just to get the latest version on my OS laptop. Hrrrmph.
But right now I can't justify the expense of yet another Photoshop upgrade (YAPU) to the family CFO, so I'll probably drop back to 10.3.9 until I can sell enough used books, or one of my cameras, to pay for it.
Tough times.
Even tougher, come to think of it .. it's vacation over and back to work on Monday.

Hi,
may I ask what are the operations you find difficult to do on gimp? Just out of curiosity. Personally I use a combination of
1. JIPImage (and especially ViewerG application, it is fantastic)
2. GIMP
3. ImageJ
on my Linux/Windows boxes and I do a lot of Computer Vision work (this is what I am paid for)
I have never ever used Photoshop. Number 1 and 3 work easily under solaris because they are in Java (I have both on another spare PCBSD box)
if you have proble with Number 1 just tell me.

After using Photoshop for years it just becomes second nature, like touch typing, and switching to GIMP is like switching from qwerty to dvorak: can't focus on real work and it's frustrating. There's GIMPshop though I haven't tried it myself.

I tried using GIMP and GimpShop, just no match for photoshop... I have settled for Photoshop Elements 6 on my mac until I can get the money to buy the new CS Suite for Mac.. I have CS1 from windows, but unfortunately you can't do a cross platform upgrade. So I need to buy it straight. For the moment PSE seems to do most of what all I need to do. It has come a long way since the first or second version.

I hear that PSE on the Mac is not as full-featured as it is on Windows. Some comments I've seen say that it's barely usable. But maybe those are comments about earlier versions. We'll see.

Strongly suggest to try PAINT.NET (www.getpaint.net). This is open source software I learned to love.
Best regards,
Ben
