Richard Friedman is a senior staff information engineer documenting the Sun Studio compilers and contributing to the Sun Studio portal at developers.sun.com and the Sun HPC portal at hpc.sun.com.

He also is a photographer and has a life and a radio program.

• They Used Computers For That

Sun Bicycle  

My friend Bill was anxious to show me the special sticker on his new high-performance trail bike.

This shows that computers are in fact used for things other than the internet and web sites. The structural and aerodynamic design of this bike were computed on a Sun system in Taiwan, and probably using Fortran.

Go Bill, Go! 

Update:   Specialized Bicycles, founded in Morgan Hill, CA, in 1974, designs and manufactures a complete line of high-performance bicycles and components. They entered into a co-branding "Designed on Sun" in 1999. Read more here...

Way cool. I think it's more likely that the bike was made in Taiwan, but designed in the US. Specialized is located in Morgan Hill, CA.
