久しぶりに、最近困った翻訳の話です。それは subscription! 英語だと色々使えて便利なんだけど、その分、日本語にするのは難しいんです。

Subscription to this mailing list is mandatory.

この場合は、メーリングリストを「購読する」
これは、いいですよね。問題ないです。

the subscription to the event "NewMsg":

んー、これもがんばって「購読」で... いってみます。ちょっと苦しいけど。「〜に対して登録」というふうに訳してもいいかもしれません。

これは「購読」では無理です〜。「契約」か「加入」ですが、対象が何かによって異なります。ソフトウェアなどのサービスサポート契約であれば「契約」で、「加入」ではかえって違和感があります。一方、保険契約やケーブル TV などの場合は、「ご加入」という言葉が多く使われるので、「契約」では違和感が...

こうして見ていくと、その対象をどのように捉えているかで訳が違ってきます。ある程度定型のものがパッケージとして用意されていて、それに対して「入る」「入らない」という意識のものだと「加入」がいいですが、そうでない場合、つまり、個別に対応が必要なものだと「契約」になるのかな...。

最近はカタカナで「サブスクリプション」という使い方もされていますね。

カタカナ... 元々概念として存在しなかったものをそのまま取り入れて、呼び名を響きのとおりに使う、という手法は、便利ですが意味不明の言葉を増やしてしまいがち。国立国語研究所に叱られそう... かといって、漢字だらけになって黒っぽーいページになってもねえ... と、迷います。要はバランスなんですけどね。おっと、ちょっと脱線。

subscription については、契約の呼び名に使われている場合は、カタカナを使うこともありますが、説明する部分では、できるだけカタカナは避けて説明しようとしています。そのときに、購読か、契約か、登録か、加入か、サブスクリプションかー、といつも悩んでいます。

Oh, I realize now I have to explain Japanese translation in English...let me try. "Subscription" is the common term used in the documents. It is handy since it covers various meaning in one term, but it tortures the translator.

Subscription to this mailing list is mandatory.

Japanese translation will be 購読 which means to register yourself to read the mailing list. This is not a problem.

Humm... it can be the same translation "購読"... but I don't feel comfortable. The event does not read anything, but just setting up to listen to or refer to. Maybe "登録" is better.

This cannot be 購読. This is to make a contract to purchase something, and the translation will be 加入 or 契約, which depends on what the subject is.

If it is the software service support, 契約 sounds better. If Cable TV package or life/health insurance, 加入 is better.

What is the difference between them ? I think if the object is less customizable and prepared as a set-up package, we prefer 加入. While, we use 契約 if the object can be modified depending on the needs or more "cost" oriented... I don't know.

Lately, we often use Katakana like「サブスクリプション」

Katakana... we use it to take the original idea which we have not known ever, and emulate the accents in English. It is very convenient because we name the new idea in a word or two, but we should use Katakana carefully not to increase too many unfamiliar terms which are just the repetition of the English terms in accents. I know I have to learn more from 国立国語研究所. Oh, I have come down to this end ... let me get back to Subscription.

I use Katakana when call the specific contract/service name including subscription, but try to use "Japanese" (Kanji and Hiragana) to explain what it means. That is why I am often wondering - is this 購読 ? 契約 ? 登録 ? or サブスクリプション ??
