while の訳し方 (How to translate "while")
久しぶりに翻訳方法について書いてみます。ユーザーグループのみなさんと翻訳のことについて話すのは、本当に楽しいです。今日はその中から間違いやすい while について。

while の訳は「〜している間」というのがよく知られています。でもこれは、ちょっと違うみたいじゃないですか ?
このツールでのアプリケーション開発が非常に簡単である間は、アドオンが素晴らしく効率を改善します。
いまひとつ意味がわかりませんよね。while には、「〜ではあるが」という意味もあるのです。くだけた言い方をすれば「ま、確かに〜なんだけどね、」という感じ。だから、この訳は次のようなのがぴったりです。

「〜のあいだ」という意味の英語には during もあります。意味はほぼ同じですが、その後にくる英語の構文が違います。during の後ろは必ず名詞です。一方、while の後ろには主語+述語の文がきます。

(あなたが) お休みの間、この件について誰と話せばいいですか ?

書くときじゃなくて話すときは、わたしは while の方をよく使うんですが、みなさんはどうですか ? during はその後が短くないと自分でも構文を作りにくいし、聞く方もわかりにくいから、while が多くなるのかもね。

In Japan, I believe "while" is translated usually as "for a certain period of time in which something is going on", but it seems to be not appropriate in this case, doesn't it ?

Hummm... it does not make sense. This is because the translation should be "it is true, but ...". It is not strict "however" or "but", and just slightly add the implication of opposite or different idea.

You can use "during" to represent the former one (for a certain period of time...). The difference is what it follows; "while" will be followed by Subject + Verb, and "during" by Noun.

Most of the cases, I use "while" in speaking. Maybe because it is more convenient... I can start with "I" or "you" or something as a subject. This will not break my stream of thoughts. How about you, English speakers ?
