Getting Started Guide translation has been finished and announced to i18n-discuss mailing list! This is a wonderful accomplishment as the first attempt working with community for "document" translation. By "document" I mean the structured format documents such as SGML or XML.

I've been thinking it takes a long time until Sun can work with communities to translate this "complicated" format. Yes, we've experienced translating message files in .po and help or Web documents in .html files, but I thought SGML/XML documents would be another long way to go. Now what !? They, JA OpenSolaris community, has just made it with great quality. I was amazed and deeply impressed.

Also, I have to mention the comments from reviewers are wonderful. They are straight to the point and they even corrected the mistakes in English description.

It was fun to communicate with them about how to translate/review, and exchange thoughts on the translation. After it is published, I look back what we've done and realized I was given more than I do. I was so happy to work with them, and want to continue this attempt. Ken Okubo, one of the skilled contributors, talked about translating manual pages which are new to OpenSolaris 2008.05. We're thinking about posting them on wiki so that any interested people can take a look to understand what those new commands perform. Anyone else interested ? ついに! OpenSolaris 入門の翻訳も完了しました! 翻訳プロジェクトマネージャーの加賀谷から、
i18n-discuss メーリングリストにアナウンスが出ていましたね。これは、個人的にとても感慨深いです。SGML/XML などの構造化されたフォーマットのドキュメントを、初めてコミュニティーと一緒に翻訳できました。。。ああ、うれしい。

これまでも、.po ファイル形式のメッセージや html でのドキュメントやヘルプ翻訳はありましたし、それもとても大きなステップでした。でもでも、章が複数あって目次があって、段落構成が複雑で、といった SGML/XML のドキュメントを一緒に翻訳するのは、まだまだ遠い道のりだろうなぁと、なかばあきらめていたのです。なのに、OpenSolaris コミュニティーのみなさんは、その壁をひらりと越えてしまったんですねぇ。しかも、中身もとてもわかりやすく日本語にしてくれており... わたしは感動しました。

翻訳だけでなく、査読をしてくださった方々も、すごいです。的を射たコメントが多数あり、中には英語の間違いを修正してくれているものさえありました。

翻訳・査読のやりとりがとても楽しく、また、一緒に作ったんだなぁと充実感もあって、自分も頑張ったけど、それ以上に嬉しいプレゼントをもらったなと感じています。みなさん、ありがとうございました。せっかくなので、これで終わりにしないで、このほかにも翻訳活動をしたいなと思っています。今、査読に大きな貢献をしてくださった、大久保賢さんという方と、OpenSolaris 2008.05 から増えたコマンドのマニュアルページを翻訳するのはどうだろうね、と話し合っています。まずは、wiki で共有できるようにして、コマンドの説明をパッと見たい人に役立ててもらえれば、なんて考えています。どなたか興味のある方、いらっしゃいませんか ? コメントでもメールでも (reiko ドット saito アット sun.com)、気軽にコンタクトしてください。

先日のブログは英語だけ書いて力尽きてしまったので、今日は日本語から。。。お盆休みの前に夏休みをいただいて旅行してきました。実家の大阪と琵琶湖です。琵琶湖の湖畔の宿に泊まって、琵琶湖で泳いできました。湖で泳ぐことを「湖水浴」というそうですね。海で泳ぐことは海水浴だから、そうなんでしょうが... なんだか、湖の水を浴びて楽しむ... という印象が。森林浴という言葉からの連想かしら。海水浴なら迷わず「海で泳ぐことやんかー」と思えるのに。言葉の印象って不思議。

だから、新しく登場した英語の用語に、新しい日本語の呼び名 (用語) を決めるとき、これでいいのかと迷うのだろうな... すでに定着している用語の場合は、言葉自体とその意味に乖離があっても気にならないのに、新しく作るときは、できるだけその意味を反映した言葉にしたくなる。。。そして、長すぎて困る。。。というジレンマ。困った例が Solaris の preemptive self-healing でした。

自分で問題を予測して自分で修正するという機能なので、日本語で正確に訳せば「予測的自己修復機能」です。でも、「長い! 漢字多い! 言いにくい!」というのが正直な感想でした。セルフヒーリングとカタカナにした方が、イメージが伝わりやすいんじゃないかしら、と思ったのですが、当時はまだ「ヒーリング」という言葉が浸透しているかどうか確信が持てず、漢字案で行くことに... あぁ、しかし今となってはヒーリングにしたいです! 読んでわかりやすいかもしれないけど、言いにくいし、やっぱり漢字の連続は読みにくいです。「名が体を表す」のはいいことですが、「表す」のは、すべてを忠実に表現することではなく、その内容のエッセンスを短い言葉の中に埋め込んで、キーワードとして機能するようにすることじゃないかと思うのです。だから、全部言い尽くさなくても、言葉として定着すればいいのだと思います。

これまでは用語の変更は、リリースの忙しい時期に出現箇所を特定して影響を考えて... ということがあったので慎重にしていましたが、今後は翻訳メモリー (TM) をリリース間でも編集できるようになったので、より積極的に進めていこうと思っています。

... あ、夏休みの話を書く「つれづれ」ブログにしたかったのに、また仕事の話になってしまった。タイトルも「エネルギーは貯めるより作る」だったのに、もうスペースないので、この件は次回に。。。

I gave up writing the last entry in Japanese - sorry for Japanese readers. So, this time, I started with Japanese. I have just been back from my summer vacation - my vacation was a little earlier than most of Japanese people who will have one in this week. I've been to Osaka, my home town, and Lake Biwa in Shiga prefecture. After staying my parents' house, we stayed at the lake-side hotel and enjoyed swimming in Lake Biwa. I did not know swimming in the lake is called 湖水浴 [ko-sui-yoku, meaning "Lake Water Bathing"] which means "enjoying the lake water" literally. It sounds odd to me... I don't know why. Maybe because the term "森林浴" [shin-rin-yoku, meaning Woods Bushes Bathing] is popular now in Japan which means "enjoy staying in the woods and bathing the fresh air generated by trees and leaves". Considering the same expression, 湖水浴 sounds like "enjoy staying in/by the lake and bathing the lake water". It is different from what 海水浴 implies to me. 海水浴 [kai-sui-yoku, meaning Sea Water Bathing] means "playing in and by the sea" to me. In a word, 海水浴 has been used for long time, and now I don't think what it means. It is more like a keyword, but 湖水浴 is new, and I have to assume it's meaning from the word itself.

This reminds me of the repeated struggle when we are determining the new translation for the new English term. Since the term itself is new, we want to explain as much and precise as possible in the translation of the term. Unfortunately, it often results in the long and complicated expression. I remember the term "preemptive self-healing" for Solaris.

It is the function that Solaris finds the possible problem by itself and fix automatically. The suggested and determined translation was 予測的自己修復機能 meaning 予測的 = preemptive, 自己 = self, 修復 = healing, and 機能 = function. Yes, it perfectly represents what it is. But, now I regret why I had approved this term. This is long, too many Kanji (high density), and hard to call it verbally. I should have chosen Katakana "セルフヒーリング" (reading is almost the same as self-healing). However, I was not sure the term ヒーリング (healing) was popular in Japan at that time. What I learned from this is "the term is not always the full explanation of the meaning, but should work as a keyword". The importance of keyword is, in addition to the preciseness, "easy to call and remember".

We used to be very careful and conservative to change the term which is once used in the products, but now our infrastructure is changing and uses Translation Memory more pro-actively. Now it is possible to change terms between releases without affecting the schedule. I will make full of this advantage, going forward.

Oops, I wanted to write a happy blog about my vacation but now here I am... talking about translation again. I have to change title from "Energy to be generated, not to be saved".

Yea! We finished localizing OpenSolaris 2008.05 Release Notes into Japanese! This is really a great milestone. We have four contributors for this translation. Seiji Takegata, Natsumi Matsuzaki, and I translated, and Yuichi Suzuki and Ken Okubo reviewed the Release Notes. Thank you very much for your contribution, folks!

The localized file is available on OpenSolaris portal: Janapese Release Notes. You can select the languages where Release Notes is localized from the pull down menu on Release Notes page.

I am very proud Japanese is listed as one of the localized languages. I know this is not the first contribution from OpenSolaris JA community, but this is memorable for the following reasons:

• Used translation tools - Internal TM server and OmegaT.
  
• Worked in a team - Four of community members worked together.
  
• Both translation and review was done by community.
  

It was my first time as well to use OmegaT to merge all the translations. TM worked well but I had to struggle with merging multiple TMs. I especially thank JC for supporting me all the way from Kagawa by emails or phone calls. I cannot go through this without you!

Next step is to publish translated and reviewed Getting Started Guide. Now it is in the editing process. As soon as it is ready, I will share the news on mailing list and on my blog.
