Coming
soon to a computer near you...
I
recently started at Sun Microsystems as a Product Manager for
OpenSSO, and I could not have been more happy with my first
assignment – Entitlements – by far one of coolest product feature
in OpenSSO. Entitlements is ready to roll out sometime in the
summer. I thought, I'd share some of the excerpts of conversation I had with one
of my rather cynical alter ego.
“So what's
the big hoopla?? What is Entitlements anyways...”
“Entitlements
is the administration, resolution, enforcement, and review of
policies that govern access to resources. It addresses
the issue of how
to extend the solution, to not only protect doorways (access to web
applications and web
services), but also to protect the objects of those services and determine the
authorization of who has access to what.”
"...So, what's the big deal about it? There are so many products in the market
that offer Entitlements Solution. Isn't yours just one of them?”
“Not really.
Most of the entitlement solutions currently in the market are
delivered as a stand alone product, while our model focuses on
being a single solution. Let
me rephrase for you..It's the only open source solution in the
market that provides web access management, federated single sign-on and web services
security, Entitlements in a single, self-contained Java application
– JUST ONE PRODUCT!! pretty cool, isn't it?”
“Hmm...what
else does your product offer?”
“Our Entitlements solution is highly scalable, based on a strong and
reliable underlying policy engine. It is also focused on providing
optimal performance – We support about 1 Million polices in the
application.”

“Anything more?”
“We have extensively collaborated with our customers and the OpenSSO community to make our product human readable, and easy to use. There is no need for an expert level developer or an admin to configure it. Our newly designed interface has an easy policy creation tool with drag and drop capability to create complex policies. Creating a Policy or adding a resource could not have been easier. Check it out!!!
Besides that, our entitlements solution is not only admin focused but also has a developer focus. Meaning that a developer can define resources and object and enable objects for authorization decisions in the application.
