OpenSolaris 2008.11 installed
Last weekend I installed on my new laptop OpenSolaris 2008.11. I have a Toshiba R600 Portege with a 128G Solid State Disk adn 3GB memory.
The installation worked without any problems. Initially sound was not working, fortunately another user has already reported this problem. After setting the correct BIOS settings also the sound worked. Network access, wifi and 3D desktop worked out of the box.
I were really surprised how much progress the OpenSolaris developments made. Kudos to the Solaris engineering.
In the software repositories I found all the applications I need for my daily work. OpenOffice 3.0, Netbeans 6.5, pidgin. I only miss video codecs.

This drawback is making me think of switching back to Linux until vlc or mplayer is available on OpenSolaris.

You can, of course, purchase the codecs from fluendo.com . OTHO, if you don't feel like paying the 28 € , LifeWithSolaris.jp provides the best vlc packages that will make Linux users evny.
At the present time, however, that repository is down.
