The Journal of Recreational Mathematics
|
When I was in school in England, studying for my A levels, one of the subjects was mathematics. I love maths problems and my teacher at that time suggested I write away to the publishers of the Journal of Recreational Mathematics and ask if they could send me a free copy. |
The journal is published in America so writing away to an unknown company overseas was a new experience for me at the time. It took several weeks to arrive, but finally, in the mail was a copy of Volume 6, Number 3 (Summer 1973). Way cool. It was a great magazine. I've kept it to this day. I unfortunately couldn't afford a subscription at the time, what with being a starving student still living at home and all. Until this week, I'd totally forgotten I had it.
So it was quite a surprise whilst I was browsing the magazine racks in Keplers a day or two ago, to see what looked to be the same journal. It wasn't. It was Volume 32, Number 2 (2003-2004), but the art work on the cover is almost identical (just the logo of the publisher has changed and the person editing it). I quickly purchased it. Thirty plus years on, the type of content is still the same, although the references sections now include lots of web URL's, which make it much easier for me to get further information.
Looking around on the web, it looks like getting a complimentary copy of the journal nowadays is much easier, especially if you are okay with an online version. I'll now be looking out for more magazines like this at the local library book sales.
