Vinyl to CDROM Conversion - Some Comments

Now that I'm about 10-12 disks into converting our vinyl record collection to CDROM (see previous post), I thought I'd share some comments on the experience.

The conversion is going well. Each disk is approximately taking "the length of the tracks" + "about 20 minutes". The twenty minutes are for:

• Noise reduction.
• Dividing up each side of the recorded LP into tracks and labeling them.
• Burning the CDROM.
• Creating a label for the jewel case.

There are a few things that slow me down depending upon the record:

• Concept albums are driving me crazy. You know the ones. Where one track just going straight into the next one (like Dark Side of the Moon). Dividing these up into individual tracks is either very hard or just not worth doing. If you don't divide them up, then you loose the track naming. Maybe Audacity handles this better than CoolEdit. I need to check.
• Blank CD-R's. I bought 100 of these. Absolutely nothing on them. Which side is up? I'm finding that I occasionally put them in upside down. Windows Media Player will then tell me that the tracks "will not fit", so that's my clue that I need to invert it.
• No entry or a bogus entry for my album in the album database that iTunes looks up when the CDROM is first inserted. I then have to go in and either enter all the band/album/track information by hand or adjust the existing entries.

I'm currently converting about 3-4 records a week (what with all the other things going on in my life). At this rate we should have our record collection converts in 7-9 months. A little longer than I'd hoped, but it's a lot better then them just sitting there doing nothing.
