A Tribute To Cider

A few months ago, Coolboy did it and I thought that was pretty cool. I'd like to try that. Then I promptly forgot about it. Then, over the last couple of weeks, in chatting with somebody who is her own cartoon character, I've finally been inspired to really do it. What is it? It's to create a simple cartoon strip. |
I decided to see if I could find some software that would do most of the work. I googled for "create your own cartoon strip" and worked my way through the top hits. I finally came across an entry in Bambi and Tera's Mac360 website that described Comic Life a Mac OS X application.
I downloaded the 30-day free trial, installed it and thirty minutes later I had my own very simple cartoon. Click on the thumbnail above to see it. The words are from an old Fred Wedlock joke. For the artwork, I wimped out and took the Apple approach, and just uses silhouettes of people. It's something the BBC put together for a piece on Viagra. Quite ironic really.
It's very rare nowadays that I use software that makes me go "Wow!", but this did. Noel Franus agrees with me. It was so straight forward, and simple to use. And so powerful. It also has a great online help builtin, for the one occasion when I couldn't immediately find what I was looking for. The rest was all obvious and intuitive.
I've hardly scratched the surface of this program. It's got so many great features and it's so well integrated with the rest of the Mac OS X desktop.
It's quite amazing what somebody with minimal artistic talent can do with the right tools. For my next strip, I'll even (gasp) use four different pictures.
