Free Computer Books, Tutorials and Lecture Notes

This morning, Jeremy Uejio gave a pointer on an internal email alias to Sun's own account with O'Reilly's Safari Books Online.

If you are a Sun employee, this is a great resource. I've been using it for several years. Other companies have setup similar relationships with O'Reilly.

See the sidebar on the right of the web page on how to register.

Another great resource (and open to everybody) is at FreeComputerBooks.com. There they have a huge repository of pointers to books, tutorials and lecture notes on a variety of subjects.

As Brian warns in his comment below (thanks!), use at your own discretion, and make sure that the copyright is valid for what you are looking at.

Most new computer books are quite expensive to buy, so this might be a good alternative if you are looking for information on a specific topic.

I wouldn't recommend this site, if I were you, and I certainly would not use it. The policy of this site is that they provide links to other sites and since they are actually hosting the content, they do not do care whether or not the actual content is a pirate copy in violation of the copyright. While much of many of the links are in fact to free content, many are to sites tha are clearly in violation of the copyright.

Thanks Brian. I've updated the post accordingly.
