That's awesome about the list -- and the outreach program in general.
As for the characters.... I was thinking Shmoo or Casper the Friendly Ghost, but that's not quite right. So I asked a friend. He came up with this: http://www.slate.com/id/2126494/
That's still not quite it. These creatures are evoking some weird childhood cartoon memory I can't quite figure out. But it's definitely on the right track. This is going to keep me up tonight, I just know it....
