How to make a Volcano

I must have lead a very sheltered childhood. I never made a volcano with my Dad. Perhaps it's an American thing. As there are no volcanoes in England it's apparently not something that crosses the minds of parents or science teachers. Perhaps they didn't know how to make a volcano when I was growing up.

It's really easy to do. Here's what we did over the weekend. We took a plastic plate (the sort you use for picnics, children's birthday parties or BBQ's) and put a small glass jar in the middle (this was an old baby food jar). You cover the jar with PlayDoh and shape it like a volcano.

You then half fill the jar with baking soda. Add 4-5 drops of red food coloring. Then add a spoonful of vinegar. Repeat the last step each time your child gleefully exclaims "Do it again! Do it again!"

That rocks! I can't wait until I can help my child build one... or I could just do it for myself now.

... better still, take the baking soda, vinegar and food colouring to the beach, bury a paper cup filled with baking soda in the top of a sand castle and add the vinegar / food colouring - very realistic and probably doesn't unbalance the brittle coastal ecosystem - at least not in Santa Cruz !

Oh, but don't let the seaguls get the soda - their large appetite and small stomach causes them to explode in mid air - very disturbing.

Cool! Thanks Rich. We'll do that (the beach part, not the seagull part) when it gets a tad warmer.
