I Want A Linux/Unix Utility To ... - Update 24th January 2007

Not much time to do much work on the list this week. The Menlo Park campus is ground-zero for all of the Sun Accessibility Program Office team for the next few days, so I have three days of meetings.

I have made the following changes though:

Here's the list of new entries:

If you have suggestions for these categories, please comment. Some of them maybe inappropriate for the Linux/Unix platform; I haven't investigated any of them in detail yet.

More in a week or two.

A few months ago, I gave my old computer to my mother. She has virtually no experience with computers. I installed Ubuntu. Teaching her how to use the Gnome desktop was not as easy as I was hoping. This is not so much about the Gnome desktop itself but more that she was not aware of some of the most basic concepts that we all take for granted: - How to use the mouse (buttons, wheel, drag & drop,) - How to use most common widgets: buttons, menus, scrollbars, ... - How to manipulate windows (close, resize, move, ...) - etc So I propose to add the following entry: - learn the basics of modern GUIs I did not really search and the closest tool I could think of was gtk-demo. As its name indicates, it was not designed to be used as a tutorial but as a demo.

It took me several attempts to post my previous comment. I was getting every time the message "Comment authentication failed!" I finally realized that the problem was that I was blocking cookies on blogs.sun.com. This is likely to be a very common problem so the error message should warn about cookies. It could also be more visible (e.g in red) because it is harldy noticable.

G.22 and 24 can both be handled by Seahorse.

You could add an entry for "Convert and transfer video to my ipod". Suggested app is thinliquidfilm (http://thinliquidfilm.org).

For F4/6, try ghexedit2 or the console counterpart hexedit. I couldn't possibly live without it.

One of the (many) things I like about Linux is the availability of <strike>freeware</strike> educational software.
J7: Learn the periodic table information:

  • GNOME: Gperiodic
  • KDE: Kalzium

J8: Learn typing:

  • GNOME: TuxTyping (very cute)
  • CLI: gtypist (heavy on explanation)
  • CLI: typespeed (good for practice)

J9: Learn world geography:

  • KDE: KGeography

BTW, thanks for making those additions on my behalf! Although I'm getting pretty fast at the wipe-and-reinstall routine. So NOW I want a Linux/Unix utility to time how fast I can wipe and.... Never mind. ;-)

Quick postscript on J8 and typespeed: I just discovered that depending on the age of the person learning to type, it might be worth examining/editing the word list being used. Most of the words, at least in the English list, were fine (i.e. appropriate for kids). But a few of them surprised me.

Thanks for the comments everybody. Here are a few of my own:

S. Chauveau: I believe there are already documents out there for basic GNOME desktop use. If so, I'll add some pointers to them in this document. I've also forwarded your comment about the comment error message to the blogs.sun.com engineering team.

sxj, A. Schreiber, Ronald S. Bultje, Joanie: I'll add in your suggestions to the next version of the list.

dmbkiwi : I'll add in the new category suggestion too.
