Klutz Magic

On Saturday, Duncan and I went to the Klutz store in Palo Alto, to see a wonderful magic and comedy show by Phil Ackerly. The show was on two levels; entertainment for both the kids and the adults. As Phil put it, "if it's not funny, then that's the magic part." We also got some social commentary from Phil (exorbitant house prices in Palo Alto and the popularity -- or lack thereof -- of our wonderful President).
Phil's been doing this for a long time. He's got a wonderful gift in how he interacts with the young children. Everybody was engrossed. The humour was spot on too. For several of the tricks he also showed the kids how they were done, so they can go home and practice on their friends. He does have a real rabbit but it wasn't a part of the show that day. The kids just got to pet it at the end. There were also several giveaways for each child, which was a nice touch.
As I've mentioned before, the Klutz people create wonderful fun educational, childrens activity books. We have several of them. I recommend The Klutz Book of Magic for your young wannabee magicians. They also have lots of events at their Palo Alto store. Next week, it's a spring cleaning sale (25% off everything) and next month, there's the 11th Annual SCHOOL BENEFIT DAY!
"We'll donate 101% of any purchase you make at the Klutz store to the local public school of your choice. That's right: one hundred and one percent! If you hand us any money, we'll give all of it and more to your school. It's a great cause and a great party, with special events and surprises all day long."
I don't work for these guys, but I'll plug their great work any chance I can get.
