Kurt Vonnegut - Please Stop Writing!

Kurt Vonnegut, this goes out to you. I've recently read two of your "latest" books and I have this to say.

Let me quote from your Wikipedia entry:

"With the publication of his novel Timequake, Vonnegut announced his retirement from writing fiction. He currently writes for the magazine In These Times, focusing on subjects ranging from contemptuous criticism of President George W. Bush's administration to simple observational pieces on topics such as a trip to the post office. In 2005, many of his essays were collected in a new bestselling book entitled A Man Without A Country, which he insists is his last contribution."

Mr Vonnegut, I realize you are in your eighties now and you've lived through some truly dreadful times. I want to remember you for the great works you did 30-50 years ago, so please stick to this declaration and stop writing.

I think I'll go back now and read some of the earlier books that you wrote, that I've missed, and make up for the sour taste you've left in my brain.

Sadly, I have to agree. I'm a huge Vonnegut fan, but his recent works have struck me as little more than disjointed rants. :-(

I also remember reading a Vonnegut book and thinking "he's lost it, I'll never read another". That was somewhere around 1974. I can't remember if "Breakfast of Champions" was the book that did it, or if "Breakfast of Champions" was the last good one. That bit about pages with just a big asterisk does sound very familiar though, like he used it 30 years ago.

The asterisk bit was indeed in Breakfast of Champions. While I haven't read A Man without a Country, I suspect the asterisks mean something different. :-)

Rich, what are the asterisks used to symbolize?

The asterisks are at the end of the "chapters" (if you can call them that). When they are there, they seem to always be on the right page. I would guess they are there so that the "chalk on a blackboard" quotes are always on the left page; i.e. an alternative to just leaving a blank page.

There is an "inverted asterisk" (white asterisk on black page) or a left page just before the Authors Notes at the end, instead of another quote. Then the Author Notes start on the right page. Sadly there is a white asterisk on the page before the black one.

It all looks like padding to fill out what is already a small book.

If I hadn't seen it at a library book sale for 50c over the weekend, I would never have bought it.

Ah. Thanks for the explanation. The symbolism is definitely different then -- much more crude in BoC.

If you go to his web site, you'll see the asterisk in the book as the little 16x16 favicon that's rendered in the browser URL field. At least for me with Firefox.

Holy cow, check out the site's art page. You can sport an asterisk of your very own for the bargin-basement price of $100 - $300. Rich, when's your birthday. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Regarding what I said about the asterisks meaning something different than they did in BoC, I'm having second thoughts:

  1. Rich said: "I have to wonder whether the only reason for publishing this book was so you could share your views to a larger audience, on President George W. Bush and what he's doing to this country and the rest of the world."
  2. If you scroll on further down the art page, you'll find "Neocon Wallpaper" which consists of a bunch of asterisks.

Q.E.D. :-) (and back to work)

Yeah, I've been coming to the same conclusion.
