Monterey Bay Aquarium - August 2006

Last Monday we visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium, probably for the last time this year. We had this great idea that doing it on a Monday when a lot of kids should be back at school (Duncan started back two days later), would mean it should be fairly quiet. Wrong. Seems everybody else had the same idea. It was packed.

A few comments on some of the images:

We caught the sea otters having a nap. The blue jacket is faux-kelp, to help the little fella get over his feelings of kelplessness.

Silhouettes of visitors watching large tuna swim by. This was one time I'd wished I'd had a higher resolution camera with me.

The aquarium seems to be using a lot more hi-def displays since the last time I visited. This one was in the style of a sea-food bar. The three people are lecturing telling you all about the ecological problems related to each dish they show you.

The penguin habitat. At least the above-water part. I often get a chuckle thinking about whether the penguins ever have deep thoughts about the sky above their heads, which they can just reach up and peck.

If you've ever wondered what creates the tidal surge effects in the kelp forest, you can go up on the roof and see the giant plunger.

Some of the glass work in the Jellies Living Art exhibit. If you've seen the lobby of the Bellagio in Los Vagas, you'll recognize the work of Dale Chihuly.
