My First Post On The design @ Sun Blog
|
A couple of weeks ago, Maya, one of the xDesign folks at Sun, asked me if I'd like to be one of the contributors to the design @ Sun blog. In particular, blogging about accessibility related design. |
I accepted. Today was my first post. As this is a serious topic oriented blog, they have a different setup than I do with my own blog. The potential posts are vetted and then scheduled to appear. It felt weird waiting about ten days for the post to see the light of day, but I guess I'll get used to it.

I find it a little strange you seem to have disassociated "serious" with "openness". Why is it necessary to vet your material when you were asked to contribute to a project? Don't they trust you? If so, why did they ask you to contribute?
Doesn't make much sense to me. Could you clarify this seeming contradiction?

Hi Chris,
I don't honestly think the folks that are running
the design@Sun blog understanding blogging.
They have their own way of doing things and
I just went along with it.
They want to make sure:
1/ Each post is appropriate and what
they are looking for.
2/ The time to post is scheduled so there is a
constant flow of posts.
They are trying to make sure that what they write
gets read. This isn't easy unless you are a well
known personality or a senior exec (or both).
They are assuming that because I'm near the
top of the "Popular Blogs" at Sun, I have a lot
of readers. They are hoping that that might draw
in new readership.
Those figures don't reflect reality.
Months ago, I was asked to put together some
helpful blogging tip. See:
http://blogs.sun.com/richb/entry/blogging_tips_for_new_bloggers
To me, blogging is all about speaking in a natural
voice and only speaking when you have something to
say.
I hope at some time they change their blog to
be a more open and free style (open in the sense
that there is no vetting of posts and free in the
sense of being able to publish at any time).
