Project Blackbox

This is one of the disadvantages of working from home. You can miss out on the interesting events that happen at the Sun campus. I've cut the number of meetings I have to attend, down to about 2-3 a week, yet the Project Blackbox launch yesterday still managed to coincide with one of them.

We really are creating some exciting and innovative hardware nowadays. This one has so many possibilities and scenerios. I really liked that Jonathan, in an internal email annoucement, called it a prototype and not a product. The first version of something is rarely perfect. Hopefully we'll get feedback from our customers, listen to what they have say, and adjust the design accordingly.

As Tim Bray mentions, these containers are just begging for graffiti. We should think ahead. I can just imagine our sales force asking these questions soon:

"And what color would you like?"

"For a little extra cost, we can arrange for a custom paint job from one of our in-house artists. Would you like us to quote you for that?"

Maybe a variant of this kind of design, so that we can also supply the offices for the IT staff.

And stacking. Don't forget stacking. Check out this article. Is this similar to what a future eBay's data centre might look like?

Wasn't there a google(?) internal research project into this? Rings a bell. Or perhaps just another intarweb rumour.
