Recently Read (July - Sept 2005)

In a similar style to a previous post, here's a list of several books that I've read over the last three months, (that I haven't already reviewed in more detail), with an Amazon-style star rating.

Hi Rich - speaking of recommending Terry Pratchett: I know "The Colour of Magic" is a good starting point in terms of being the first Discworld novel, but shortly after that one came out, the publisher also released "Strata" and "The Dark Side of the Sun". Reading between the lines, I reckoned those were earlier works which TP had not been able to get published... until "The Colour of Magic" got him established as a 'bankable' author. They aren't Discworld novels, but they're both an engaging read, especially Dark Side of the Sun, which has the usual crop of great inventiveness in it (including one of my favourite vignettes, pretty much tossed in as a by-the-by, where a tiny robotic spider nips out across its copper-wire web and starts dismantling an equally tiny robotic fly with a minute oxy-acetylene torch).

Hi Robin. Agreed. Anything by Pratchett is great. So much so, that I've just pre-ordered Where is my Cow, a "companion" book to Thud. I'm expecting that our son Duncan will get the most pleasure out of this, but I'm looking forward to doing my impersonation of Sam Vimes (you have to read Thud to know what I mean).
