Remakes

Seems the Hollywood film companies are having trouble coming up with original new movies. According to the latest TV Guide, the following old TV shows are going to be remade into movies, some this year and some with dates TBA.

Lots of your favorite stars. Nicole Kidman as Samantha on Bewitched with Will Farrell as her hubby Darrin (and Shirley MacLaine as Endora) sounds intriging.

It's a natural progression: several years ago, there was a writers' strike. As a result, the Entertainment Cabal made up a new genre of shows that should have been called "shows without scripts" but they called them "reality shows" often enough for that name to stick. Result: all the scriptwriters starved, and now the Cabal have no new scripts, cannot make any new things, and can only re-make. Voila.

I don't think Firefly really counts as a remake. The series was on for so short a time, it is really more like a change of venue.

I am often amazed by the lack of new stories from Hollywood. Any movie or series that is old and good is a candidate for a remake under the "updating for a new audience" paradigm. If it is old and bad, then it is a remake under "I can do it better." Alas, this last rarely is true.
