Searching For Sand Dollars

Labor Day (two days ago), saw us heading off to Miramar Beach, just north of Half Moon Bay. This is also the next beach down the coast from Princeton-by-the-Sea where we go for the tide pools. You can see it on the right side of one of the shots I took from a previous tide pool adventure. The first image above, is the reverse, looking out over to Princeton.

We were looking for Sand Dollars. The last time we went to Princeton-by-the-Sea, one of the other beach walkers told us that we'd be able to find lots of them at Miramar. From doing a bit of research before hand, I felt I knew that we were looking for.

There were a couple of problems challenges in the way. We came on a day when the second low tide was 3.3 metres. The best time to find them (according to a local) is between high tide and low tide and with a very low tide. If we'd come about 1am that day (low tide at 2:30am of -0.3m) we'd have picked a perfect time - apart from not being able to see cus it was dark. Next time we'll consult the tide tables and pick a good day. Also, everybody else seemed to have the same idea. There were lots of people walking along the shoreline looking down for "white coins" in the wet sand.

After about an hour or two, we'd found about 8-10 decent ones including two which looked to be completely whole. The next thing, to do would be to make some jewelry or art out of them.

The last picture above shows one of the several seals that came right in to have a look at all the people on the beach. Right there. Those four dark pixels in the middle. I still get a kick out of things like this. I guess it's because the only objects that ever used to float in close to shore on the English beachs where I grew up, were other peoples trash.
