The Leafy Sea Dragons Are Gone!

We popped down to Monterey for a visit to the Aquarium yesterday. The second grade at Duncan's school are doing a special project on Penguins this year, so we were looking for all things penguin-like to help him.

No new big exhibits this time, but three things to report:

The Leafy Sea Dragons are gone! These were my favorite creatures at Monterey Bay Aquarium. I could stand and watch them for hours. We spoke with one of the helpers there and she said that they'd got a viral infection. Bummer. I do hope that they will replace them.

The giant octopus was out and moving about. In all the years I've been going there, this is the first time I've ever seen it. I snapped a lousy picture with my phone (see above). Lynea said this was only the second time she'd seen it and the other time was with it just poking out of its hole. I've no idea what's made it suddenly active but it was quite incredible to watch. The Monterey Bay Aquarium web page calls it a new exhibit, so perhaps they've replaced the octupus or bricked up it's hole.

There is a wonderful tide pool exhibit. A glass dome that you can sit under, with the tide pool water flooding over it to simulate the incoming tide. For the first time, we sat under the the water as it splashed down. There is no under estimating the Wow! factor for small kids from this exhibit.
