About a week ago we spent the afternoon at the TheTech Museum of Innovation in San Jose. We picked the same day as they were celebrating the Chinese New Year so parking was difficult, but the upside was that the museum wasn't very busy.
It's the first time I've been there, though Duncan and Lynea have been a couple times before. Lots of interactive exhibits and a whole area especially designed for very young kids.
I'll let you explore their website for more general information, but here are
a few notes on the images above. Click on the thumbnails to get a (slightly)
larger view. I forgot my new camera, so back to my cell phone for this trip.
Now if they'd only invent a reasonably priced 5.1 megapixel camera phone
that was easy to carry and use, I wouldn't have this problem. It's either that or I'll
have to start wearing those trousers pants with lots of pockets.
- A large globe interactively showing you the effects of global warming.
- A Whack a Spam stand. Duncan really got into this. Pity it wasn't a
Wham a Spam Sender stand. I'd have really got into that.
- How to "hi-tech" arm wrestling.
- A robot arm that spelt out your name in letter blocks. Very cool.
- The data server room. You'll notice a few old Sun servers up front and
center there, plus lots of other equipment.
- Using a web camera, your chance to put your face in a space suit.
- The large
pool ball"marble" machine outside the museum.
This is only a small sampling of what's on show. You can easily spend a full day here if you get to see everything.
The highlight of the day for me was seeing Happy Feet on the IMAX screen. Great sound and visuals. Impossible to come away from this movie without at least one of its songs wedged in your head. I'd like to thank Robin Williams for his Ramón voice, without which the dialogue would surely have stalled in many places. Not sure all the kids got the in-your-face environmental messages, but the adults could hardly miss it.
