A couple of my readers, including myself, might ask how good the GOM was this year.
So let me add some very short notes.
DAY 1
The Rocker: I was probably sleeping
Extrema: Was able to attend only the final notes. EXTREMAly sorry
Lauren Harris: Conventional. But that's a way to educate a daughter, good ol' Steve
Voivod: Very, very good. Didn't know them so well, but I really enjoyed their set under a no-mercy Sun and humidity
Backyard Babies: Powerful hard rockers, but not exactly my kind
Epica: What can I say. I have a wife. She might read. Well, a fascinating set
Marty Friedman: Good old Megadeth axeman has just fallen in love with sushi bars, and it's not a joke: the japanese rythm guitarist is a real street fighter
Edguy: better the heavy metal song than the other hard rock pieces
Lita Ford: She still rocks!
Queensrÿche: very energetic, but the volume was strangely low
Tesla: if you don't love Aerosmith, you cannot love Tesla. Unfortunately, they also experienced a couple of major technical problems
Heaven & Hell: Old masters cannot be killed, ever. And my "uncle" Tony Iommi still rocks the world, with a powerful rythm section and Ronnie at the vocals. We have Sabbath back!
Mötley Crüe: "I'll give you proof that God does not exist. Yesterday evening Heaven & Hell played here, which is good. But the real proof of the non-existence of God is that Mötley Crüe followed them" (J. Walker, Carcass)
DAY 2
Black Dahlia Murder: Could not make it
Static X: Same as above
Cynic: Same as above
Napalm Death: They might get old, but it's always difficult to describe something this brutal
Saxon: Their tour bus could not make it to the show. At least, that's what they say. Hope the old ambassadors of Saxonia are safe and healthy
Mastodon: The most surprising set of the entire show. Nothing can apparently stop their evolution, from the conventional doom band of some years ago to this. Their latest album might not be so good but... great live set! No surprise Tool like them
Tarja: Same as Epica. I have a wife.
Down: The latest creature from Phil Anselmo is still as powerful as Pantera, but the feeling is that something (or someone) is missing
Blind Guardian: Let me wear my viking helmet again and fight in the land of nocturnia!!
Carcass: The masters of my (not-so-responsible) youth still break your ears apart, with a continuous flow of surgical riffs
Dream Theater: The John Vs. Jordan a-solo from Metropolis was worth the price of the whole show. Never seen something as perfect.
Slipknot: You cannot kill something that you did not create. But who created Slipknot? I remember my KISS childhood, and if you see those wacky masked guys as a wrestling match with a musical score it's really fantastic. Let apart the drummer, honestly they tried hard, coming just after Dream Theater. Michael Portnoy also tried to get on their drum set: the Iowa masks are lucky anyway, they have loads of young fans out there.
Peace out
