Robert Holt's WeblogRobert Holt's Weblog I've been loving George Ou's quest for a low power PC. Today he posted on low power supplies - it's good to see someone in the main stream press tackling this subject. The real issue is the CPUs though - I'm still waiting to get hold of one of Via's 1watt CPUs. Post a Comment: Comments are closed for this entry. |

Finally a reasonably cheap 80 Plus power supply.
I got an Intel D201GLY system with 3.5" hard drive down to 31W idle and 37W peak using this power supply :). I love the competition between Intel and Via, Via is being forced to drop prices in response to Intel.
I also can't wait for those 1W Via CPUs but Silverthorne is very interesting with 2500 chips per 300mm wafer.

I'm not so sure the issue is the CPU any more once you get down to this power range. It's getting really hard to find a small enough 80 Plus PSU since most of those 80 Plus PSUs are in the 400 to 600 watt range. The "80 Plus" rating is worthless when you're at 10% loading.
When you have a system that only draws 30W of power, it's possible to be throwing 20W away if you're using an oversized and overpriced "80 Plus" PSU.
