I know I am getting old, in instant messaging there is a growing trend to say "heh"... what's up with that? The various web sites define it as:
a short laugh, exactly what it looks like

It is sometimes important to let the other side know that 1) you got the message, 2) you saw the humor in it. That's all.
Saying it for no reason at all, or following up immediately with another thing, is kinda silly.
OTOH, I often converse with a guy who's in the habit of starting every response with a single-line "well", which drives me crazy. If you must type that, at least resist the urge to hit Return after it, just continue with your thought...
so perhaps it's just different buttons.
