Microsoft wants it's users to UNINSTALL Netscape

yep, after a bashing for bundling internet explorer the browser with the WIndows OS, it's Microsoft's turn to avenge it's browsers divorce from the OS. The issue sprouted up this afternoon on a MSDN Blog, where Microsoft's chief IE developer Dave Mass recommended that users completely uninstall Netscape as a possible workaround for a bug that Microsoft has discovered in Netscape 8. AOL spokesman Andrew Weinstein insists the bug only affects "a very small percentage of [IE] users" who visit pages using XML technology. Netscape 8 is based on the Mozilla Foundation's Firefox code base, which means that security bugs in Firefox are likely to affect Netscape 8 users. So I'd assume that Microsoft would want everybody to uninstall Firefox as well. With Netscape 8 and Firefox gone, Why should Mozilla be left behind ? Guess what Microsoft wants is users to have ONLY IE on their desktops.... sinister... I am really not sure what to make of this, because Ben Goodger, the lead firefox developer has also posted on his weblog that Netscape 8 is unsafe... This is gonna be a very interesting one to follow...

UPDATE : Netscape is working on a fix for this bug. They are not denying the fact or sidetracking the issue. You can follow the discussions around a fix for this bug at community.netscape.com

Ben Goodger's Blog has surely caused some stirring in the browser space.

Ben Goodge goes on to say "If security is important to you, this demonstration should show that browsers that are redistributions of the official Mozilla releases are never going to give you security updates as quickly as Mozilla will itself for its supported products"

The following post on webmasterworld has the solution:

I've verified that this solution works. If Netscape 8 is not uninstalled the registry entry keeps coming back. Here is the text of that post:

OK to fix this issue uninstall Netscape and then Hit START->RUN

Type: regedit

Hit ENTER

Navigate to the following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension

Highlight and right-click the node titled ".xml" and select delete.

Restart your browser and you should be good-to-go.

As posted on computerworld this PM, I beleive that the Netscape Bug is NOT a conspiracy as claimed have been theorized by me. All I am saying here is that netscape, like mozilla, firefox, opera etc are all products, and every product has bugs. I'm not saying that netscape is BUG-FREE. Well, for that matter IE is not BUG-FREE either. But however the blog that brought to light, which happens to be from Microsoft's lead IE developer Dave Mass was a pointer to UNINSTALL NETSCAPE!!.

If that's the way one is supposed to respond to BUG discoveries; I should have uninstalled IE a long time ago. Asking users to uninstall a product without giving time for the product developers to investigate further and release a fix or a patch is what I termed sinister.

This However DOES NOT constitute a conspiracy theory

Maybe I DID go over the top with the title. It should have rather read as Microsoft's Lead Develoepr Dave Mass's recommendation was to unInstall IE; and probably the term "sinister" was absolutely inappropriate. I Apologize for that.
