Gentoo/Portage Experience

Monday Jan 31, 2005

Dear Blog,

The Portaris (Portage for Solaris project) seems to have a ton of potential so I played around with the Linux/x86 version of Gentoo/Portage yesterday. Since I wanted to focus on playing with Portage, I cheated and started by loading the the Vida Linux OS "Download CD" minus Gnome. That gives you a nice barebones Gentoo system and uses Anaconda to do device detection and config.

This was on a 5-year old laptop -- Toshiba Portege 7140.

Video and Xorg configured great as did eth0/dhcp. No sound at first, but alsaconfig was there. Ran it and it easily recognized the sound device and automatically configured rc scripts and module configs for me. Love it. I played around with emerge -- emerging vim, and a couple other non-GUI things; then xmms. No problems. :-)

So I've been wanting to try out DigitaDJ which is by the same guy who authored Grip. So I thought, that's a kinda obscure package for Portage to know about, maybe I can trip it up. So this morning I went to a shell prompt and typed "emerge digitaldj"... no problem! ... Well, one small problem... it didn't occur to me that I was in for a one heckofa long build because it depends on libgnome and Mysql. On a laptop w/ a 266 Mhz CPU and 128 MB RAM. :-/

Oh well. I left it happily building away and went to work.

So when I get home, I should have a new music server system waiting for me. :-)
