One of the things I'm looking at in my new role here at Sun is the user generated
content space -- established and emerging. And I'm considering how we,
at Sun, express the conversations that we're having as a business in
these spaces.
First: the hype. The blogosphere buzz started as a faint hum about 6-7 years ago. Now it's got the intensity of a
kicked bee hive.
Is it all that? The first question I need an answer to is how do we quantify the space? What really is the opportunity here
for Sun -- or any other corporate player.
You get a sense for how big
the broadcast mediascape is when you
channel-surf on a satelite TV -- hundreds and hundreds of channels with language dimension that rivals Babel.
I'm in California this week meeting with my team and the business partners I'll be working with across Sun.
I'm going to be responsible for the editorial content on some of our key web properties and the corporate activity we've got going on in what I call emerging social ecosystems -- social media, user generated content spaces, virtual worlds.

On sunny, cold, windy Saturday in March of this year, my kids and I
were comfortably settled in our cozy living room. I was on the couch,
with my laptop, wirelessly connected to the Internet. My kids were also
on the web -- using the family computer in the corner of the room to
play in Webkinz World.
