So this is goodbye... Well, there is a reason this blog has not been updated for so long. I've been rather busy wrapping up stuff here, there and everywhere. Oh, and it's my last day today. I feel it's my time to move on, and after nearly 6 years, it's the most difficult decision I had to make. So it's so long and good luck! Maybe I will try and start up a category in one of my other blogs on Solaris G11N. If my sun blog is still up, my contact address is whykay[at]gmail[dot]com . A need for an editor to remap your keyboard? Is there a need for an editor to redefine the mapping of your keyboard? It's just a curiousity. From answers that I can get back via the emailing conventional way, I gathered there are mainly 2 groups: * Just use the "keyboard layout switching applet in Gnome":http://projects.gnome.hu/gkb/ , and most users are happy with that. * For more fine tweaking, users will just use xkb to remap some keys, and these are normally the really uber-geek folks (as I found out that xkb is somewhat complicated to get to work if creating a new layout, whilst getting lost in its directory structure ;) ). Some folks just stick to xmodmap to mainly change the Caps Lock and Control key. :) There are many 3rd party ones, but not that many (near non-existent) OS ones out there for fine grain tweaking. Or is it just a nice to have thing at the end of the day. For me, it would help alot, as I dealt with alot of enquiries about keyboard layouts, and we "support alot of keyboard layouts":http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-2521/6mi67tj40?a=view . [Basic] Language Vs Locale There has always been confusion between language and locale. Language : It's a system of gestures, sounds, symbols, or words used for communication i.e. French, English, Chinese etc... Locale : Definition of language and country settings for a system. This would include time, date, currency, special characters, numbers. It general has the following formation : language_country[.codeset][@modifier] Examples * en_IE (English_Ireland) :: Also known as Irish locale. Tuesday February 1 10:56:24 GMT 2005 * de_CH (German_Switzerland) :: Also known as German-Swiss locale. Dienstag, 1. Februar 2005, 10:56:24 Uhr GMT * en_US (English_America) :: Also known as Amercian locale. Tue Feb 1 16:25:26 GMT 2005 ( Jan 31 2005, 05:07:07 PM GMT ) Permalink Comments [0]

Add/Remove locales after Solaris installation This would be more "Solaris 9 Update Release":http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5770/6ml72d6kg?a=view and "Solaris 10":http://developers.sun.com/techtopics/global/products_platforms/solaris/reference/docs/solaris_10_express_i18n_features.html specific. Adding locales after a Solaris install means the admin would need to have knowledge of "what locales" and "what packages" associated to install in order for an additional locale to work. G11N developed this utility to make life a little bit easier. :) With Locale Administrator, this will help eliminate this, all you need to do is supply the command line tool (localeadm) with : * Location of image media * Locale (en_IE.ISO8859-1) or region (weu) Follow the instructions and you will end up with a system updated with the new locale/region. See "localeadm":http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-5166/6mbb1kq69?a=view (1M) for more information. (I'll probably update more on this little utility in the near future.) **Other References** * (From Solaris G11N) "Adding locales in Solaris 9":http://developers.sun.com/dev/gadc/techtips/sol9_locale_pkgs/index.html. * (From Solaris G11N) "Solaris Locales FAQ":http://developers.sun.com/dev/gadc/faq/locale.html * You can even "ask a G11N expert while you are at Solaris G11N site":http://developers.sun.com/techtopics/global/products_platforms/solaris/index.html ! :) ( Jan 25 2005, 03:52:40 PM GMT ) Permalink Comments [0]

Hello I suppose it would be nice to say "hi". I've noticed a lack of l10n/i18n (g11n) blogs in Sun (plenty of docs though). So I decided to start one (should have started ages ago! ;). Well here it is, and I hope I would be able to share some tidbits on locales, keyboards (and any other g11n-related stuff) for Solaris and JDS. I know more about Solaris than JDS btw. :) So "Hello world!", and I will try to post as often as I can. ( Jan 24 2005, 03:48:48 PM GMT ) Permalink Comments [2]
