Reasons Why I Like Working at Sun

Here are some of the reasons why I am happy to be working at Sun Microsystems. What are yours?

1. People. It feels great to be among intelligent, funny and interesting people. The concentration of idiots is very low in Sun.

2. Squash. I can play squash during launch break. We have in Prague a squash league and as I spend around 10 hours a day at the computer I appreciate I can refresh myself with sport.

3. Technologies. I can work with latest Java, JDS, Linux, Solaris, J2EE, J2ME... whatever. It's nice to have something to play with.

4. Time to study. I can spend part of my job by improving my skills and knowledge. There's always what to improve.

5. Blogging. I am allowed to blog. Even encouraged to blog. I can spread the holy word of NetBeans.

6. Work from home. Starting by this week it's possible for me to work one day in a week remotely. Not only it saves 2 hours for transport, it also helps to concentrate on my work. And I can have music playing laud as much as I want.

7. Freedom. I can choose how my day at work will look like. Nobody's ordering me that I have to do this or that and as long as I do my job well I can choose my priorities.

8. English. I have great English classes where I can improve my communication skills. Maybe my grammar will get better, too, although I still doubt it.

9. Communication. Part of my job is communication with the community around NetBeans. It's interesting to exchange opinions with people from all around the world.

10. I don't have to wake up early. This one is self-explaning, isn't it?

11. Fun. As you can see elsewhere in my blog, there are people here who have good sense of humor.

There are also few things which don't make me so happy when working at Sun. I will not post them here because I could get into serious troubles with my manager :-)
Comments:

I'll add 1 more. Culture of Contrarian. We don't follow the majority and dare to think and do differently. Iwan.

Yes, I fully agree with that.

Me, too. I don't quite share the benefit of #2 or #10, but #1 is surely what I appreciate the most. And I'm sorry to hear about your bottle. (And keep up the great work - AWESOME progress on NetBeans! - and the great blog)

Jonathan, thanks for your encouraging words, I'll try to do my best both to improve NetBeans and to update my blog. P.S. Any spare bottles in Menlo Park?

Roman,

Reading you I'm feeling more and more miserable for missing those Netbeans positions in Prague last year...:) - #3 is perhaps the only one of your points which is true for our office right now (yep, I've even got bad looks from some people for "blogging during office hours").

Oh sorry, it was definitely not my intention to make somebody feel miserable. To clarify, I only wrote about the good things and benefits. Of course there are also negatives, but I certainly don't want to complain about them in my blog. Concerning blogging, I consider it as great marketing. So it is helpful, although I try to blog (or prepare texts for blog) outside office hours ... ;-)

Nice to hear! If you would like me to write about any specific topics, let me know. I will be able to write best posts about editor or usability, but maybe I'll be able to cover some other topics ;-)

All fresh features (even alpha) and trick-tips are interesting.
As the Rich Client is rising now, Is there any plan to support Webstart/JNLP editing, packaging and deploying?
I remember the Jdeveloper has some restricted support.

REPEAT:
I still didn't get any feedback about the 'browse CVS repository'- such as, I want to browse the CVS repostiry of Java.net and I fill out:
the server -'cvs.dev.java.net'
the path -'/cvs' and
other information...
Almost all others IDEs could list all projects in the CVS repository but Netbeans just say, 'no module found' after clicking 'All' in the check out dialog. Sure it would be successful when specifying one special project. But sometime I really need to browse it and checkout the interesting one, like the mustang and j3d...

I'll ask about CVS people who work on it. Btw, concerning these questions you may prefer to write me an e-mail. Webstart was discussed here, but I do not know the conclusions. We're still planning 4.2 so once plans are ready I will definitely write about them (if I'm allowed).
