UNIX manual sections
I've had this little .txt file around for years, with a listing of the abbreviations for UNIX manual sections and their meanings. This is obviously not complete, but maybe others will find it useful as well..
User Commands (1)
Commands found only in the SunOS/BSD Compatibility Package (1B)
Commands for communicating with other systems (1C)
Commands associated with Form and Menu Language Interpretations (1F)
Commands specific for SunOS (1S)
System Administration Commands (1M)
System Calls (2)
Standard C Library Functions (3C)
SunOS/BSD Compatibility Functions (3UCB)
Standard Headers (3HEAD)
File formats (4)
Standards, Environments and Macros (5)
Games and screensavers (6)
File Systems (7FS)
Ioctl Requests (7I)
Devices (7D)
Maintenance Commands (8)
Driver Entry Points (9E)
Kernel Functions for Drivers (9F)
Data Structures for Drivers (9S)
To access a specific manual section, add the # after man(1) or supply the '-s #' argument to it.
Good to see them all listed here. I sometimes resort to "man -k" and try to parse the results to find what I'm looking for.
It would help if "man -h" printed out this table. Additionally, if we had the equivalent of "grep -l" which listed out the sections that contained my keyword instead of the more verbose "man -k" that would be helpful too.

Well, that's not *all* of them, not nearly. There are lots of sub-sections of section 3. There's section 9. There's other sub-sections not listed. "ls -d /usr/share/man/man* | wc -l" shows 100 sections and subsections altogether. But that's not all, since (5SQL) manpages are not in their own man5sql directory, but in man5 (those, BTW, are PostgreSQL manpages!).
