If you are a windows addict and are stuck with a file that is in ODF (open document format)..here's a solution.
Get the SUN ODF plugin for MS Office.
http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/get.jsp

After having downloaded and installed the plugin,it will automatically become visible in MS excel, word, powerpoint etc. If it does not, here is what you should do..
1. In Excel, choose Tools - Add-Ins...
2. Click the Browse button.
3. Navigate to the installed file odfaddin.xla. This file resides in a folder like "c:\Program Files\Sun\Sun ODF Plugin for Microsoft Office\converter"
4. Click the odfaddin.xla file and click OK. (To stop using the plugin, uncheck the plugin in the Add-Ins dialog box.)

  • In order to use the plugin, start Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. In Word, the ODF format is available as an additional filter in the file dialog.
An additional toolbar in Excel and PowerPoint shows the icons "Import ODF" and "Export ODF".
  • To open an ODF file in Word, choose File - Open. In the dialog, select the file format "ODF Text Document (*.odt)", then select any file with the extension *.odt.
In Excel, choose File - Import ODF Spreadsheet. In the dialog, select any file with the extension *.ods.
In PowerPoint, choose File - Import ODF Presentation. In the dialog, select any file with the extension *.odp.

  • To save an ODF file in Word, choose File - Save or File - Save As. In the dialog, select the file format "ODF Text Document (*.odt)", then enter a name for the file.
In Excel, choose File - Export ODF Spreadsheet. In the dialog, enter a name for the file.
In PowerPoint, choose File - Export ODF Presentation. In the dialog, enter a name for the file.

PS:"Saving" versus "exporting": In Word, you can save the current document directly in the OpenDocument format. In Excel and PowerPoint, you can only export to ODF. When you save to ODF, from that moment on you are working on the ODF document. When you export to ODF, a snapshot of the current document is written to an ODF file, but you still work on the same document that you once opened.
Hope this proves useful!!! blogs.sun.com/images/smileys/smile.gif" class="smiley" alt=":)" title=":)" />

Comments:

How do I remove the annoying "Import ODF" and "Export ODF" buttons. I'm perfectly capbable of using them on the File menu and they keep coming back when I remove them.

Thank you for your description on how to enable the toolbar in Excel manually. :) It came only in Powerpoint, so I was a bit frustrated, but now I'm very happy :)

As a comp tech at a Norwegian primary school, I'd like to translate this description to Norwegian to enable my fellow teachers to manage this by themselves. I hope this is OK with you, Saloni Arya. I will of course also put in a link to this blog, for reference. But not all Norwegians are good at technical English ;)

@Fredrik
This is perfectly fine by me. I would offcourse want the knowledge presented through my blog to spread far and wide :)

Is anyone able to help me with the extra toolbar buttons that appear. I'm having to close that toolbar every time I start an office application at the moment - otherwise it makes my useable screen size smaller.

Matthew: I was able to move/copy the two buttons onto the standard toolbar, thus no need for the ODF toolbar. Now we only need to not load it, and so far I haven't found a sollution. Will post it if I find one.
Another option to unload it is to move it next to one of the other bars.

After uninstalling SUN ODF Plugi 3.0, closing session, installing SUN ODF Plugin version 3.1... Excel at every start keeps asking me for 'C:\Program files\Sun\Sun ODF Plugin for Microsoft Office 3.0\converter\odfaddin.xla'.

Once again SUN's installer/uninstaller are very poorly written and cause troubles...

I have exactly the same problem as the anonymous poster above, with Excel asking for the 3.0 file whenever it starts up after I uninstalled that and replaced it with 3.1. I'd also like a solution for removing the plugin toolbar as it is annoyingly persistent.

I have the same problem as the two posters above, but with the 1.2 version. The solution?

Fuking Sun Software... where's the solution?

Here's how to get rid of the annoying 1.2 reminder:

open regedit
delete the following keys under
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel\Options

All the ones that open odfaddin.xla v1.2
