REST is showing some life?
With my fingers crudely attempting to sample the pulse of the internet zeitgeist i am detecting an up tick in REST.
It seems to be getting more attention in blogs, a couple of interesting/amusing articles (The
S stands for Simple and REST Dialogues: Getting Data
and
Setting Data) and REST-based frameworks for Ruby and Python.
This trend is also mirrored on the REST discuss mailing list. The chart below shows the total number of emails sent each year to the list:
The chart shows an up tick in 2006, but it has yet to see the heights of 2002 when the SOAP bubble was rising!
I think the relatively recent focus on scripting languages like Ruby, Python and JavaScript, and frameworks to rapidly develop Web applications is creating a new demand to build simple and scalable services that expose those applications, to clients, via XML and HTTP and using the best designed parts of the Web.
