Yes, I like the distinction between perceiving compliance as an obstacle and perceiving it as something which enables you to do what you want more safely. It reminds me of that ancient piece of Chinese wisdom:
"Do not seek to follow in the sages' footsteps: seek to find what they were looking for".
You may still find you're walking in their footsteps, but it won't seem a pain, because you'll be focussed on the reason for doing so...
