The NetBeans Portlet Plugin  is now available for download which  includes a plugin for the Portlet Container 1.0 Beta component bundled with the Java Application Platform SDK Update 2 release. Read about Java Application Platform SDK Update2 release here. To download the Java Application Platform SDK Update 2 click here.

Portlet Container 1.0 Beta, an Enterprise Class Portlet Container implementation is derived from the open source project on https://portlet-container.dev.java.net.

As a plugin for NetBeans IDE 5.5 and above, current release of NetBeans Portlet Plugin helps developers to develop, deploy and test portlets on the Portlet Container 1.0 Beta component that is part of the Java Application Platform SDK U2 from their NetBeans IDE. NetBeans Portlet Plugin makes portlet development as easy as writing a normal Java application, with all the features of portlets made available to you at the click of a mouse.

Some highlights of this plugin are

  • Provides wizard based support to create a JSR-168 based generic portlet application.

  • Generates deployment descriptor automatically.

  • Provides support to specify different portlet modes while a new portlet  is added.

  • Portlet deployment/undeployment support on the Portlet Container 1.0 Beta component.

  • Provides support to view output of a single portlet

  • Provides support to launch admin tool directly from NetBeans IDE.

  • Provides support to start and stop Portlet Container 1.0 Beta from NetBeans IDE.

The plugin distribution appears to be missing the following class: org.netbeans.modules.portalpack.servers.base_psframework NetBeans fails to restart properly complaining the above class was needed and not found. I poked around the jars in the zip dist and cannot find it...

Keith, there are 3 nbm files in plugin zip file. You need to install all 3 nbms. org-netbeans-modules-portalpack-servers-base_psframework.nbm is the module for base_psframework. This plugin works only on Netbeans 5.5 and above. Go to Tools > Module Manger and check if all of the three modules are installed or not. You should find "Base PSFramework" under Library and "Generic Portlets"/ "OS PortletContainer" under PortalPack. Hope it helps.

The first time I tried the plugins, I followed the install instructions verbatim. I also tried installing framework .nbm by itself. The framework will not install. Do I have to install the plugins globally? I am using Netbeans 5.5 on Ubuntu Linux 6.10 with JDK 1.6.0 final. I also have the Java Platform 5 SDK Update 2 properly installed so I have a test portlet container. My NetBeans install also includes the Enterprise, Visual Web and Profiler packs. Any ideas?

Keith, You don't need to install the plugin globally. Are running Netbeans as root or user ? Can you try installing those 3 nbms as root if you are trying as user? Also check in Tools > Module Manager if all of the three modules are in active state.

I tried both ways, root and user. After an install only one plugin is active (I forgot which one, I am away from my box at the moment), the framework plugin does not install at all and on the IDE re-start, I have to disable the other which depends on the framework to start the IDE. As another test, I am going to install the IDE under a single user account only, instead of a shared install for multiple users. When I have time later I will send the error detail for your review.

The plugins installed correctly when NetBeans was installed under my user account. It would not work with NetBeans installed in a shared location '/opt' and the plugins targeted for a local user install.

Keith, I will submit this as an issue in issue tracker to make sure that it will be handled in future release. Thanks for your feedback and suggestions.
