Trekking & Mountaineering
Photographs from Washington (WA state) Hiking trip We planned eight days hiking trip in Washington trip and went to following places (23rd June - 1st July 2007) :-
Lassen Volcanic National Park Yet another set of photographs from a different kind of National park and this time I choose a national park which had Volcanic activity. The history of Lassen National Park goes when ancient battle between the earth shaping forces of creation and destruction in Northern California took place. It is also called Land of Volcanoes. We did three treks in this region (Cinder Cone - A Crater at the top of peak, Lassen Peak and Bumpass Hell trail).
Sequoia National Park (Alta Peak) & Orange County, California Photographs of our backpack in Sequoia National Park (Alta Peak). In this part of the region you will find Sequoia Trees and they are the largest tree (volume-wise) in the world. The largest tree in the world is called 'Sherman Tree'. We did two day backpack in this region and climbed Alta Peak.
22 miles hike in Point Reyes National Seashore Park and Caves
A long drive to Santa Barbara and Big Sur
Some photographs of recent Trek
Seven days in Alaska (Seward and Denali National Park) During the labour day weekend, I spent seven days in Alaska and mainly in Seward and Denali National Park. We drove 861 miles and did two day hikes. The encounter with bear on McKinley Bar trail was something which taught us more about bears later. We saw Northern lights, Killer Wale in Seward Glacier Cruise and clear views of Mt. McKinley which stands very tall at 20320 feet. Nights were freezing cold (below 29F) and it rained whenever we were travelling. All the photographs were taken using Nikon D70s SLR camera with 18-125mm DC lenses (28-185mm effective focal lenght). Complete album can be found here and some of the pictures are :-
First DSLR experience... This is my first SLR and I'm beginning to like a lot. I recently bought Nikon D70s with 18-125mm focal length (when converted to 35mm, it will be 28-185mm ie 1.5x factor). I took some photographs and have been experimenting. I need to learn a lot though. I have not been able to blur the background properly when taking the subject close enough, freezing the motion etc. I wanted to buy Nikon's 18-200mm VR stuff but they were very expensive and back-ordered too. Here are some very preliminary photographs from my camera :-
Mineral King Valley During the July break, we were thinking of going somewhere when Akhilesh suggested backpacking in Mineral King. Using Stanford Outing Club, we could find seven more people. The plan was to do one day car camping at Atwell Car Camp site and three days at Franklin Lake (10400 feet). The drive from Three rivers to Mineral King is tough and there are 698 curves (25 miles stretch). After spending one night at Atwell camp site, we started trekking for Franklin lake which took six hours to climb (5.5 miles). Next day, only six of us went to Franklin Pass at 11,800 feet altitude and it was really beautiful. On the third day, we came back to Mineral King. The camping was exciting and we had plenty of food. Unfortunately we couldn't see bears. Photographs from Dan and Sumanth can be found in the link.
A visit to Big Sur, Muir Woods and Points Reyes Please find the photographs of the places we visited this weekend.
Photographs of Nubra Valley, K-Top and Srinagar (Dal Lake) I'm putting the photographs of Nubra Valley, Khardung La Pass (Highest motorable road in the world) and Dal lake in Srinagar. This trip was done in Sept/Oct time frame. Thanks.
Photographs of Leh, Nubra Valley and Manali-Leh highway I'm putting the photographs of Nubra Valley, Leh and Manali-Leh road highway. I hope you will like them. Somehow my camera started functioning and hence I could take few snaps during the later half of the journey.
Photographs of Hampta Pass Trek I'm putting the photographs of Hampta Pass trek (19th Sept - 22nd Sept 2005). Thanks to Anu Jain and his friends who could take these photographs as my camera, rucksack and I were in deep water for few seconds trying to learn swimming in the glacier :-). This trek was executed without any help from portors or guide. Uncle and I were carrying eatables, tent and all. I'll try my best to put the photographs of Chandra Tal lake (Spiti), Leh, Nubra Valley, Ladkah, Kargil, Drass and Srinagar.
Photographs of Solang Valley and Chaukori I'm putting the photographs of Solang Valley in Himanchal Pradesh (14 kms from Manali) and Chaukori in Pithoragarh distt. of Uttaranchal. I went alone to Solang for skiing in early March 2005 and then to Chaukori for a trip. My uncle, Dipanker (in HP) and I recetly scaled Kumaraparvata (in western ghats) again and this time we did it in one day and that too when rains were at its peak. We decided to drive upto Subrahmanya and were out of Bangalore by 4.30 pm on 1st July 2005. Next day we started the trek at 6.30 am and were back to Subrahmanya by 8.15 pm. We were all wet and in fact climbing the last hurdle i.e a rock clif was most difficult because of the water fall. If you do this trek in summar you will a rock whereas if you do this trek in monsoon you will find a water fall. So the last climb was difficult. I had goofed up on the way back. Since the peak had gatthered thick fog, rain and high velocity winds, I had failed to find the route back to the water fall. It was when we tried to approach towards Pushpagiri, we noticed a small trail going somewhere and that was the route back to Subrahmanya. It was 4.30 pm by the time we discovevered the route. The Leeches had troubled us a lot. Our cloths were red by the time we were in Subrahmanya. Next day we drove from Subrahmanya and it was amazing. We took too many halts on the way back because we had ample time to return to bangalore. We couldn't take photographs because of rains.(2005-07-06 20:08:39.0) Permalink Comments [1] Photographs of a 8-day Expedition I'm putting the photographs of a 8 day expedition (Goe-chala 5000m trek) in Sikkim. Team members were (a) Saurabh (Leader) (b) BR Janardhan uncle (72 yrs old). This expedition was executed without any portors, cook or guide. We survived for 8 days by eating dry items.
