What’s smug and deserves to be decapitated?
Matthew Parris: My Week
A festive custom we could do worse than foster would be stringing piano wire across country lanes to decapitate cyclists. It’s not just the Lycra, though Heaven knows this atrocity alone should be a capital offence; nor the helmets, though these ludicrous items of headgear are designed to protect the only part of a cyclist that is not usefully employed; nor the self-righteousness, though a small band of sports cyclists on winter’s morning emits more of that than a cathedral at evensong; nor even the brutish disregard for all other road users, though the lynching of a cyclist by a mob of mothers with pushchairs would be a joy to witness.

I read the original article and decided not to comment. I found that it was hard for me not to draw the conclusion that this was the ranting of a typical old school Tory, a fully paid up member of the nasty party, who having been deprived of other minorities to make offensive vindictive and untrue statements has realised that cyclists are a useful out group on which to vent his hateful bile. There seemed little point in rising to the bait as there was nothing in his vile prose that was approaching truth.
I'm not even sure that I 'm pleased that he looks to win the "most number of complaints to the press complaints commission" for 2007 and may well make it an all time record. Since this just draws more readers to his shabby work.
However next time, and unfortunately there is certain to be a next time, some cyclist is garrotted by a wire strung across the path I will be referring to the wire as a "Parris wire".
