Why have the dutch got it right ?

I was in Holland last week and the number of cyclist was outstanding, and this wasn't a large city such as Amsterdam, it was on the outskirts of Breda.

Also the lack of need for major security, most bikes just have a lock on the rear wheel to stop them being cycled away, no need for lockers or padlocking to fixed lock points.
I did note that most of the bikes weren't worth stealing but this doesn't normally stop a thief in the UK.

Comments:

In .nl, if a bike isn't bolted to something very large and substantial, it gets stolen. That's the whole point of all the rusty old junk bikes - hoping that someone else has parked a nicer bike nearby. I think the figures last year was something like a bike getting stolen every 30 seconds ... and those are just the ones that get reported and probably doesn't include re-steals.
Buying "second-hand" bikes for a few euros from the nearest junkie is pretty common.

The bikes in the picture are great. They are utility bikes that can be ridden without special clothes and do exactly what is required. Move you from A to B.

What we lack in the UK is enough people doing utility cycling.

Guess most Swedes can afford a bike.
