TIP: Quick way to install downloaded NetBeans modules In the previous entry I talked about how to configure and use a NetBeans Update center. However that requires that someone has set up an Update Center. Some times that is not the case. Your friend sends you a cool module's NBM file as an email attachment or you download it from some website. One way to install the downloaded NBM is to use the Update Center. The steps are:

  1. Invoke the Update Ceneter by selecting the Tools:Update Ceneter menu item
  2. On the first page of the Update Center wizard - select the Install Manually Downloaded Modules (.nbm Files.) radio button
  3. On the next page - click on Add... button, browse to the downloaded NBM file, select it and add it to list of modules to be installed
  4. Finish the wizard to install the module.

There is a shorter way based on using the Favorites window. Here is the tip:

Let us assume that you always store the downloaded NBM files in the folder /netbeans/modules.

  1. Open the Favorites window by selecting Window:Favorites menu item or typing Ctrl+3.
  2. In the Favorites window invoke the popup menu and select Add to Favorites... menu item
  3. In the file chooser browse to the /netbeans/modules folder, select it and click on Add button.

Now the /netbeans/modules folder is added to the Favorites window. You need to do this only once.

Later, whenever you want to install a newly downloaded module, expand the /netbeans/modules node in Favorites window, select the downloaded NBM file's node and simply double click on it. This will launch the Update Center wizard with selected NBM file already added to the list of modules to installed. Now install the module by finishing the Update Center wizard.

This works great when you are installing single module NBM.

NOTE: Using the Update Center is always a better way to install/update modules.
