Just a bit about me
It occurred to me that I haven't really told you anything about me - who is this guy anyway?
My LinkedIn profile is here, which will tell you a bit more about my professional life - some of which I've already described here. I currently work as an Information Specialist at Sun Microsystems, based in Broomfield, Colorado.
My initial job description for the position indicated that I spend 80% of my time on research. The research team within Digitial Libraries & Research - which was four people for many years, but is now two people - essentially fields any request from any Sun employee anywhere in the world. We'll address anything that has to do with Sun's business. So, we'll field almost any request, from the highly technical, to market and competitive, to benchmarking, to business and management. If it affects Sun's business, and you're a Sun employee, we can help you with it.
This 80% figure was accurate for the first year or two, but as I began to take on more responsibilities, I found this percentage began to vary quite a bit - sometimes going up to 90 or 95 percent, and sometimes down to 40 to 50 percent. Currently, in addition to research, I also lead our virtual training program, do a lot of content management, and am increasingly focusing on Web 2.0 technologies, especially as they are implemented in the enterprise for information access.
What you can't really tell from my LinkedIn profile (and I need to fix that) is my involvement in SLA (the Special Libraries Association). I'm currently President of the Rocky Mountain Chapter, and also Chair-Elect of the Competitive Intelligence Division within SLA. I enjoy my involvement in SLA on a lot of levels, but one of the primary reasons is because of the amazing people you can meet. This is an extraordinary group of people.
Outside of work, I really enjoy listening to music. My tastes vary widely. In general, you could say I favor alternative, power pop and bluegrass, but I never know what I'll be listening to next. Right now, I'm listening to the Avett Brothers and Hot Club de Paris, but I've also been dabbling in Pink Martini, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Sun Kil Moon (those last two thanks to Anna)...you never know. So you'll see those pop up in my entries. If you have recommendations, something you're just bursting about, let me know!
