Maybe they should have just donated the money to charity instead of reinventing the wheel?

Why do companies still believe in proprietary code and lock-in? Is it because they are scared of competition? Or just plain greed?

I encourage you to participate in an open-source project. I do believe that if protocols and platforms are open more innovation can happen, globally, and at a faster pace.
