Got my poker mojo back...

Tuesday Dec 09, 2008

Finally, after weeks of Monday evening travels, I was in town and able to go to my once regular poker game. Still $10 and still all my friends. I'm on the edge of being invited to play at the "Final 2008 table". I won last years "Nascar points event for our poker group" but haven't been playing well this year.

Last night I made it to about the half way point of the 30 person game and went to play cash. My better half came in 5th in the tourneyment. I lost $18.50 on my first hand and repurchased for $20 and managed to play on that for quite a while.

My biggest $$ winner of the night was 2h4s as the big blind for $1. Of the nine folks at the table, 8 called and I was happy to see a flop. Flop came with Ah, 3d, Qh... I needed a 5 for a straight. The first 7 players checked the flop and the dealer (last to act) bet $3. Oddly 6 folks called the $3, so the pot had $26 in it... The turn was a 5 of diamonds... I hit my straight but two hearts and two diamonds had me worried. I was the first to act and bet $10. I had two callers, so the pot was $56. The river card was a 9 of spades to likely no help to anyone. There was no pair on the board so no possible full house and only 2 cards to a flush so only a 6 high straight would be beaten me and I didn't put the other player on that. I bet $25, which sounds to high but the other guy had been on a massive roll on the last 5 hands and had a bucket of chips and he called. He said he had two pair but didn't show after I flipped my card and announced my straight. I think he had Q-9 at best. If he had AQ, than the hand certainly got away from him. That was a fun hand.

Dividing hotels into two groups:

Friday Dec 05, 2008

Ones that have digital thermosats and those that have wall units that have off, heat low, heat high and fan...

I stayed in the second group on Wednesday night, but honestly, it wasn't that bad. I may start asking that question when booking hotels that are "too cheap".

Hand me down memory...

Wednesday Dec 03, 2008

It became apparent when playing with Virtual Box that I needed more memory for my MacBookPro. I felt guilty needed to spend money right now until I looked at the prices of memory. A year ago, I was approving memory upgrades, from 2G to 4G for my team at $200 a pop. Last week, the same upgrade cost me $55 including shipping.

I went to youtube and watched several folks upgrade their laptops and off I went. The first time, I didn't push the new boards in hard enough and the laptop wouldn't boot up. Live and learn. It is working great now and the system shows 4G installed...

As a side note, MBP memory fits into MacBook as well, so I installed my old 1's into my wife's MB that had two 512's and double her memory. I have several sets of 1's if anyone has an issue or needs back the memory... :)

iPhone app - Loopt

Wednesday Nov 19, 2008

Loving the application Loopt on my iPhone. It is the one that Apple has done some TV commercials where you can see your friends on a map. When I downloaded it went thru my contact list of 449 names and I only had 2 friends on Loopt. I have lobbied a few others and now have 8 friends on Loopt. There are times when I'm in the office and I find out later that a buddy was 20 cubes away. This will fix that.

Try it out and play around. It will change things as my kids get older and mobile. This may be a few years ahead of it's time.

Loving JetBlue (again)

Monday Nov 17, 2008

It had been a while since my last JB flight, I was so silly that I purchased a book to kill the time. I watched the WSOP final table rerun and then the 'Skins/Cowboys game before doing some work.

My Facebook account and the fun with that...

Friday Nov 14, 2008

I always thought Facebook was for the babysitter crowd. You know cute highschoolers and college kids that posted photos from bars and concerts. My wife was advised as part of her startup to do a FaceBook page and she really is digging finding and staying in touch with old friends. Over the weekend, I decided to out do her and start my own page and holy smokes, I have old buddies and classmates coming out of the woodwork. How cool. If you are out there, look me up.

iPhone app review - Say Who?

Wednesday Nov 12, 2008

My new favorite free application is Say Who? It is a voice activated phone dialer that has worked beautifully for me. The app has saved me a lot of time looking down IF I choose to talk while driving. I have about 10 folks on my favorites list and calls tons of other folks so the voice dialer is great.

Since it is free and highly recommended here and elsewhere, give it a try.

It is a bad day when...

Tuesday Nov 11, 2008

Your dentist says as you are walking out of his office, "no hard feelings right?" I had the most painful experience that I can remember. The shots didn't seem to take total effect as my cavity was getting drilled. I had a semi emergency and got my buddy to work me into his schedule almost realtime, so that was great. All better now, but 15 minutes of living hell...

Sports guy week to dream about...

Monday Nov 10, 2008

I had the biggest sports week of my life. That is a big statement, and not to take away anything from my older half marathons from a few years and 10 pounds ago. I had the biggest ESPN week, how about that?

I was able to go to Monday Night Football, Redskins versus Steelers, and take my son. He had no school on Monday or Tuesday due to election, so he was loving it. The tickets just popped up on Monday morning, thanks Bob. Then Wednesday morning, I got a call to be the DD for the Thursday night ESPN game with Virginia Tech and Maryland. Thursday morning, I got a call from a buddy with 2 more tickets. My wife claims to be a bigger Hokie fan and my little guy was really bumming. So little guy went to half day of school and missed Friday, he is only in 5th grade and to be able to hang with Mom and Dad at a great event, is worth more than a day at school.

Got to get back work now.

No blogs for a while - my bad...

Monday Nov 10, 2008

I have been a non blogging heathen, to use a John Clingan term, for a while now. Crazy busy, but lots of fun stuff going on. Entries coming. Stick with me.

Book Review: Why We Run, by Bernd Heinrich

Thursday Oct 23, 2008

I was looking for a book to help me pass time on my flight from Portland and went into the greatest bookstore ever, Powells, but not the downtown one sadly. The Bill Bryson book on Shakespeare looked interested but the ultramarathoner/biologist book on running looked even better. The author is a world class runner and quite interesting. He talks alot about the animal kingdom and how different animals propel themselves as a way for him to look at his training for a 100k race in Chicago. The book is an easy read and educational as well. Glad I bought it.

Running in downtown Portland

Wednesday Oct 22, 2008

Did I mention that I love Portland? Nice people, great food, public transit and green building that is top notch. And then there is running trails everywhere. Nike is just down the road. Looking for a late afternoon break yesterday, I laced them up and went downtown to the riverfront park that makes a loop for 3 miles on each side of the river and then across a footbridge to the other shore and you can continue. I only ran 4 miles and then walked back to my hotel, I couldn't figure out how to get across a bridge, so I took light rail to the ChinaTown stop from my hotel.

It is certainly worth the extra luggage to be able to get out and run. Thankfully everything was dry before packing, but that is what plastic bags are for anyway.

Travel Hell

Monday Oct 20, 2008

Note to self- don't do 7am flights from an airport that is over an hour from the house. I booked after NOT checking the tradeshow agenda. Yes, it starts tomorrow. Am I bitter that I based my travel plans on a marketing person, NO, not me.

I stated last night at the Richmond airport DoubleTree hotel. I got a fair rate but free parking. Hotel was great for what it is, an airport hotel. The staff was really helpful and the bed was comfy, so I could ignore the less than perfect room.

The extremely long TSA line took a total of 10 minutes. Not bad at all.

Maybe I can blog nicely about my hotel tomorrow, but the only nice thing so far was the ride to Rogue Brewpub. The hazelnut brown nectar was unreal good. The Imperial Stout was also amazing. What a great place. I tried the Choc Stout, the Shakespeare Porter, the Imperial Porter as well. The burgers were good as well. Sadly no Monday Night Football happening here.

On Sunday, I went for a hike in SNP at White Oak Canyon, which was really peaceful and nice.

Here is a great view of the lower waterfall.
