Running Geek part 2

Tuesday May 10, 2005

I'm shocked at how easy it is for me to write about being a running geek. Maybe it is because I am one... Now that we have cleared that up, I wanted to get to one of my favorite running geek things: measuring my results.

Nike's running site is by far the most complete site for logging your results and keeping track of your progress. You must first register, which only takes a second, but after, you can use the training log.

I track my mileage, the routes I run, time (and derive pace) and which shoes. Surprisingly (or not) the site will track the mileage on your shoes and let you know at 300 miles that you need to consider retiring your shoes.

I wish that they would take the data that they are warehousing and make recommendations but alas they don't (yet?). Nike knows how often I run, how far and how fast. If I provided my weight and a few other things, they should be able to give me a few Nike branded recommendations for shoes...

Note to Nike - you have the data, use it to your advantage. I'm pleased that you provide me with the log, and I try to buy Nike when I can because of it.

I ran my 8% grade hill yesterday 10 times for a total of 1 mile at a 6:25 pace... Boy, did my leg/calves scream at me this morning for that bit of foolishness. Next time, I'll cut it back to 8 or so... Using the Garmin (discussed yesterday, I can determine the grade of the hill - geeking cool, huh?)
