More home office basics

Wednesday May 25, 2005

Let me start by saying some of you will be working from home to beat traffic, to accomodate an appointment today or just because you might be feeling lousy but still need/want to do some work. You probably aren't my audience. I'll call you parttimers, and you can make do with a spot in your dining room, off of the kitchen or even your bedroom for a few hours here and there.

I work from an office that just happens to be above my garage with a seperate bathroom up a stairway from the kitchen/gathering room in my house. Nothing else is up that stairway and it doesn't connect to the upstairs where my kids reside. I could almost as easily NOT be in the same house. I also have a door to my office for sound issues (ie kids sometimes scream and they certainly cry from time to time (i have little ones))

If you are going full time with no work office, remember you must be productive if you plan to keep your job... You also have to balance family issues with work which can be tough. Just because you are home, doesn't mean that you aren't working. It isn't like being home sick and sometimes you magically feel better around 3pm.

That said, one of the perks of working from home aside from doing early late at night is that you can sign for fedex packages, take cakes out of the oven, tell the cable repair guy to shop up whenever as long as he comes tomorrow...

Guard your office, if it is a free for all, the odds are stacked against you. I have times when I make my kids leave my office and times that they can come up and take printer paper and color or draw.

Just something to think about, more tomorrow on working successfully from home.

Test new beta version of BlogEd

Wednesday May 25, 2005

Henry, the new improvements look really good. I'll play with the image insert later today. I removed the old copy using Web Start App Manager and after starting the new version, it picked up my userid/pw, and copies of old blogs... Nice to not have to jump thru hoops to make that work.

More testing later, initial reaction is quite positive.
